Fish are set at different scales and angles, drifting rather than swimming in any agreed direction, so the wall reads as a section cut through water rather than as a repeat. Each is drawn in the flat, precise Fornasetti manner, with scales and fins described as pattern, and the effect is closer to an engraved plate than to anything naturalistic.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe palettes stay within the atelier's usual classical range, which stops the design becoming a marine novelty and keeps it in the territory of the collector's cabinet. It suits an enclosed room where the conceit can be complete: a cloakroom, a bathroom, a small dining room, the inside of a study. Paired with dark timber and plain stone it is witty without being comic, which is the balance Fornasetti always struck.
