Library Frieze takes that development and reduces it to a band.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs a frieze it does a specific architectural job. Run beneath a cornice it closes the top of a wall and settles a room that feels too tall; run at dado height it establishes a horizontal the eye reads as structure, and gives the lower wall a different treatment from the upper without any joinery being installed. The drawing is close-grained and quiet, which is what a frieze needs to be. It defines an edge; it does not compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt was made to sit with the Great Masters designs, and that is where it works hardest, framing a figurative paper and giving it a border of apparent timber. Used on its own it will still give a plain room the horizontal discipline that most plain rooms lack.
