Rather than reprinting the original block, the studio repainted every flower by hand, which is a slower route to the same subject and produces a different result: the blossoms have individual character, no two are quite identical within the repeat, and the drawing has a freshness a facsimile never achieves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe structure is a climbing trail. A single branch ascends and throws out laterals at intervals, and the flowers sit along it where the plant would actually put them, so the design has botanical logic underneath the decorative one. The magnolia was a Victorian favourite for exactly this reason: it flowers on bare wood, which suits a trail, and it carried the Orientalist associations that nineteenth-century decorators wanted.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt a 72 cm straight repeat on a 0.52 m roll the trail runs the height of a wall in a single sweep, so the setting-out is worth some thought where a chimney breast or a run of joinery will interrupt it. It suits bedrooms and dressing rooms particularly, and hangs comfortably with painted furniture, old glass and plain linen.
