It was a wall in a private house, made by the man who lived there.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe subject is a city seen from above and slightly askew: roofs running into roofs, domes rising among them, windows repeated in ranks until they become a texture. There is no single vanishing point and no consistent light. Buildings are stacked rather than receding, which is how Fornasetti drew architecture throughout his career, and the result is a cityscape that behaves like a pattern while still reading as a place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe linework is bold and unbroken, and metallic detail is used to pick out an edge or a window opening so the city glints under lamplight. A 76 cm half-drop repeat on a 0.52 m roll offsets the roofline between drops and keeps the skyline from settling into a horizontal band. An entrance hall remains the ideal place for it, which is presumably the point.
