Conceived in the 1950s, the design draws on the Italian Commedia dell'arte and turns the audience into the spectacle: rows of theatregoers, boxes, tiers, gestures caught mid-conversation, all set down in the fine engraved line that is the Fornasetti signature.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEverything is carried by drawing. There is no modelling and no shadow. Depth comes from the density of the hatching and from the intervals Fornasetti leaves empty, so a wall of it holds together as a graphic field while rewarding close reading with faces, hats and postures that take time to find. The 101.8 cm straight repeat is generous, which lets the architecture of the auditorium establish itself before it begins again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn a 0.69 m roll it covers ground quickly, and the straight match keeps the tiers aligned across a run, worth planning around a chimney breast or a panelled return so the drops land where the eye expects them. Teatro belongs in rooms with a degree of formality and a sense of humour: a dining room, a cloakroom, the stair of a town house, a small bar.
