The Cole \u0026amp; Son studio worked it in watercolour, and the medium is entirely visible: edges bleed, tones pool and separate, and the colour is laid in washes rather than as flat areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe result is a pattern that behaves in two ways at once. Structurally it is geometric and repetitive, which gives a wall order. In surface it is loose and atmospheric, which stops the order becoming rigid. Very few papers manage that combination, and most formal garden designs go stiff.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe roll is a narrow 0.52 m, often an advantage in an older house, where narrow drops are easier to work around out-of-true walls and awkward returns. It is a straight match with a 76.2 cm repeat, so the parterre lines up cleanly across a run and the geometry reads as intended.
