Where most of the Dedar cords are woven yarn throughout, this one carries a high proportion of polyurethane, which gives it a smooth, close-grained surface with very little fibre texture and a low sheen, closer to a fine leather cord than to a twisted braid. The flange is cotton-backed and soft enough to sew through without fighting it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eComposition is 44 per cent polyurethane, 43 per cent cotton and 13 per cent polyester, with a 1 centimetre cord. Made in Italy. Five colourways: 001 Bianco, 003 Naturale, 004 Cuoio, 005 Bordeaux and 007 Nero. Naturale and Cuoio are the ones that read as saddlery against linen or wool; Bianco and Nero give the cleanest outline on a plain cover, and Bordeaux is the only real colour in the range.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe use it on upholstery where a scheme already has leather in it, piping a stool or a bench so the seam picks up a chair or a strap detail elsewhere in the room. It also works round the edge of a firm boxed cushion, where the smooth surface keeps its shape and does not fluff along the front rail the way a spun cord eventually will. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it against your cloth.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSewn into the seam by the flange, as any piping is, but the coated surface marks if it is pinned through, so your upholsterer should pin in the flange only. Joins are best placed at a back corner rather than mid-run. Measure the seam, add 15 per cent for turns and joins, and order in one go.
