The strands are thinner and more evenly laid than a coarse abaca, so the horizontal lines across the width fall closer together and the surface reads as a subtle tweed rather than as obvious matting. It still carries the irregularity of a hand-laid material, and no two panels are identical, but the effect is quieter, which makes it easier to live with over large areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRolls are 91 centimetres wide and 7.32 metres long. There is no printed pattern, so there is no repeat to calculate. Six colourways are offered: Parchment, Atmosphere, Pale Celadon, Tempest, Typhoon and Metal. Parchment and Atmosphere are the pale neutrals we specify most, Pale Celadon carries a soft green, and Tempest, Typhoon and Metal work through the greys. Colour variation from panel to panel is inherent to grasscloth, and the seams will read as soft vertical lines. That is the material behaving as it should.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe use Arrowroot in sitting rooms, principal bedrooms and dining rooms, and it is our usual choice when a client likes the idea of grasscloth but wants something less textural. It gives a wall depth without pattern, hangs well behind artwork, and pairs naturally with plain linen curtains, a wool rug and matt paint on the woodwork. Order a sample to see it in your own light, as grasscloth reads very differently in north light and under lamps.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHang paste-the-wall, butting the drops rather than overlapping them, and keep paste off the face as the fibre will not clean. We reverse alternate drops so that the colour evens out across the room. Order every roll from one batch and check the batch number on each label before hanging.
