Block Check is the check in Block Weaves, a woven grid on a near-square repeat of 12 centimetres down and 11.6 across, large enough to read as a check across a room but not so large that it dominates. It is woven rather than printed, so the lines have depth and the intersections shift colour slightly where the yarns cross. The blend gives it a soft drape and a quiet, matt-to-slightly-lustrous surface.

The composition is 52 per cent viscose, 25 per cent cotton, 13 per cent linen and 10 per cent polyester, 140 centimetres wide, with a 12 centimetre vertical and 11.6 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is tested to 20,000 Martindale rubs, which suits curtains and light-use upholstery rather than a family sofa. Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. A neutral woven check earns its place in almost every scheme we do. We use this one on curtains in a bedroom, on a pair of occasional chairs, on cushions to break up a plain sofa, and on a headboard where the grid gives the piece some architecture. Checks are unforgiving if they are not set out properly, so ask your maker to centre a full check on the width of each blind and on the leading edge of each curtain, and to match the horizontals across every seam. Allow one full repeat per drop plus ten per cent. With 20,000 rubs, keep it off high-traffic seating and use it for cushions and occasional pieces instead.
