Carnival Chevron is a velvet from Baker Lifestyle's Carnival Velvets book, woven with a chevron structure rather than printed, so the zigzag comes from the pile itself and shifts with the light the way only a woven velvet can. It has the soft, slightly crushed hand typical of a viscose-rich velvet, with enough body to hold a seam. Because the pattern is structural rather than printed, it survives close-up handling without the risk of a print rubbing thin.

The composition is 52 per cent viscose, 43 per cent polyester and 5 per cent cotton, woven 142 centimetres wide, with a 7 centimetre vertical and 36 centimetre horizontal repeat. Baker Lifestyle test it to 30,000 rubs on the Martindale, comfortably into general upholstery territory, and it is rated for curtains, fixed upholstery and bedspreads. One colourway, Tutti Frutti, a lively, multi-toned mix that lives up to its name.

At 30,000 rubs Carnival Chevron earns a place on an occasional chair or a footstool as well as curtains, and the chevron structure gives it real presence on a headboard. Because the colourway is playful rather than restrained, we tend to use it as a single statement piece rather than yardage across a whole room. Match the chevron carefully at every seam; allow one extra repeat per drop and plan upholstery cuts so the zigzag lines up across the front of a chair or a cushion.
