Carnival Plain is the flat, unpatterned partner to Carnival Chevron and the collection's other geometrics, woven rather than printed, with an even matt-to-soft-sheen surface and no repeat to plan around. It has enough weight to hold a fold well, without the density of a true velvet. Because there is no motif to read, the interest comes entirely from the weave's texture and the way the surface catches light across a run of curtains.

The composition is 54 per cent polyester and 46 per cent cotton, woven 140 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. Baker Lifestyle test it to 50,000 rubs on the Martindale, a strong figure, and it is rated for curtains, fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It runs to eight colourways, among them Marble, Parchment, Ocean, Lime and Silver, spanning pale neutrals through to a clear blue and a fresh green. Silver and Ocean both carry a faint sheen that reads as slightly cooler under artificial light.

We use Carnival Plain as the background cloth for the rest of the Carnival book: curtains where Salsa Diamond or Carnival Chevron is doing the main work elsewhere in the room, cushions to rest the eye, or a full sofa in one of the paler tones such as Parchment or Marble. With no repeat there is nothing to match, so order your measured quantity plus a working margin for wastage. This is one of the washable cloths in the collection, suitable for a cool machine cycle as well as dry cleaning, though we would still recommend dry cleaning anything made up and lined. Because the cloth washes as well as it dry cleans, it is a practical choice for a family sitting room where cushions see daily use. Do not tumble dry, bleach or iron hot.
