Elbury is a small-scale printed design from Baker Lifestyle's Small Prints book, worked on a polyester and cotton ground that is noticeably tougher than the pure cottons elsewhere in the range. The repeat is 16 centimetres down and 34.4 across, so the design steps four times across the cloth width and falls in close, regular rows. It is the kind of print that gives a room pattern without giving it a focal point. The hand is smooth and firm, with a slight crispness from the polyester.

It is 68 per cent polyester and 32 per cent cotton, woven 137.45 centimetres wide, a full 54 inches, with a 16.04 centimetre vertical and 34.36 centimetre horizontal repeat. The Martindale figure is 50,000 rubs, the highest in this collection, which takes it into severe domestic use. Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Aqua, Blue and Red. Aqua and Blue read fresh and cool, and Red is the one to use where you want warmth.

With 50,000 rubs we are comfortable putting Elbury on dining chairs, a window seat or fixed upholstery that gets used every day, and it is a sensible cloth for a rental or a holiday house. It also makes neat Roman blinds and a tidy bedspread. Pair it with a plain woven in the ground colour and one larger check. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The horizontal repeat is exactly a quarter of the cloth width, so the design centres cleanly on a blind if your maker sets out from the middle. Allow one vertical repeat per drop plus ten per cent. Note that Baker Lifestyle list this for fixed rather than loose upholstery, so for loose covers discuss shrinkage and seam strength with your maker before anything is cut.
