Ferndown is a mid-to-large illustrative print from Bridport, repeating 64 centimetres down and 44 across, so it steps three times across the cloth and comes round roughly every two-thirds of a metre in the drop. That scale reads clearly on a window without taking over a room. The ground is a cotton and linen blend with a soft matt finish, and the print has the loose, drawn quality that runs through the whole Bridport book.

It is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent linen, 132 centimetres wide, with a 64 centimetre vertical and 44 centimetre horizontal repeat, tested to 20,000 Martindale rubs. Blue and Aqua sit inside the collection's blue-and-white theme, and Green/Pink is the warmer, prettier option and the one we would choose for a bedroom.

Curtains first, because the vertical repeat wants the height. After that, a bedspread, a headboard, or a pair of loose-covered armchairs in a room where the sofa is plain. At 20,000 rubs we would keep it off a daily-use sofa seat and use it for backs, arms and occasional chairs instead. Pair it with Purbeck Check or Sherborne Ticking from the same book. Allow one full 64 centimetre repeat per drop: on a 250 centimetre finished length that is a cut length of around 3.1 metres per width. The 132 centimetre width is narrower than most of this collection, so wide windows need an extra half-width, and it is better to work that out before you order than after. Interline long drops so the light does not show the seams.
