Montpellier Velvet is Baker Lifestyle's plain velvet, the workhorse behind the Carnival Velvets book and the cloth most of the collection's chevrons and stripes are designed to sit against. It has a dense, even pile with a soft crush to it, no printed or woven pattern to plan around, and the kind of depth of colour you only get from a true velvet.
It is woven from 100 per cent polyester, 140 centimetres wide, with no repeat. Baker Lifestyle test it to an exceptional 100,000 rubs on the Martindale, among the hardest-wearing figures we carry, and it is rated for curtains, fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It runs to 33 colourways, from pale neutrals such as Ivory and Sand through Cranberry and Scarlet, Indigo and Midnight, Forest and Bottle, to Graphite and Storm at the darker end.
With 100,000 rubs behind it, Montpellier Velvet is one of the few fabrics in this batch we would put on a main sofa in daily family use without hesitation, and it is equally at home on curtains, a headboard or a pair of dining chairs. Because the range runs so wide, it is worth ordering two or three samples side by side before you commit, since velvet reads differently under different light. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat to match, order your measured quantity plus a working margin for wastage and turning. Steam rather than iron a plain velvet of this weight, and brush the pile in one direction across an entire piece of furniture or a pair of curtains, or the colour will appear to shift panel to panel. Dry clean only, and keep it out of strong, direct sun for the longest colour life.
