Orchard is a small woven figure from Block Weaves, repeating 4 centimetres down and 5 across, which is close enough that the cloth reads as a fine all-over texture. The structure gives it a subtle two-tone effect as the light shifts, and the hand is soft without being slack. Of the wovens in this book it is the hardest-wearing, and that changes where we are willing to use it.

It is 52 per cent viscose, 23 per cent cotton, 14 per cent linen and 11 per cent polyester, woven 140 centimetres wide with a 4 centimetre vertical and 5 centimetre horizontal repeat. The abrasion figure is 40,000 rubs on the Martindale, the highest in Block Weaves, and it is rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. One colourway, Parchment, a warm off-white that sits between cream and a pale stone.

At 40,000 rubs we use Orchard on the pieces that get sat on daily: a main sofa, dining chairs, a window seat. It is a sensible choice for a holiday let or a busy family room. As a pale neutral it also does well on full-length curtains in a bedroom. Pair it with a darker woven check on cushions and one printed cotton for colour. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is small enough to ignore when cutting, so allow ten per cent over and no more. On a pale cloth like this we would always specify a stain-repellent treatment before upholstery, and we would ask for removable, zipped seat covers on anything that takes children or dogs. On curtains, the 140 centimetre width usually avoids a join altogether.
