Purbeck Check is a woven cotton check from Bridport, on a near-square repeat of 18 centimetres down and 16.5 across. It is woven rather than printed, so the check reads the same on both faces and the colours build where the yarns cross one another. The cloth is a plain 100 per cent cotton with a crisp, dry hand, closer to a good shirting than a heavy upholstery weave, and it takes a sharp pleat.
It is 100 per cent cotton, 132 centimetres wide, repeating 18 centimetres vertically and 16.5 centimetres horizontally. No Martindale figure is published for this design. Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Blue, Aqua, Pink/Green, Red/Blue and Green/Aqua. The single-colour options are the safer buy, and the two-tone versions are where the collection's blue-and-red and pink-and-green themes come through.
We use checks like this everywhere in a scheme except as the main event: curtains in a kitchen or a child's room, Roman blinds, cushions on a plain sofa, a bed valance, the inside lead of a curtain. It is the natural partner for the Bridport printed cottons, which is exactly what it was designed to be. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Set out from the centre on every piece. A check that is not centred on a blind, a cushion or a curtain leading edge will look wrong however good the making-up is, so give your maker the finished sizes and let them plan the cuts. Allow one full repeat per drop plus ten per cent. Without a published rub count we would keep it to curtains, cushions and occasional seating.
