Ramble is the closest thing to a plain in Block Weaves. There is no stated repeat, so what you get is an all-over woven texture with a broken, wandering surface rather than a design that comes round. At arm's length it reads as a soft neutral cloth; close up there is real movement in the yarn. The viscose-led blend drapes well and takes light softly, which is what makes these wovens so useful next to a strong print.

The composition is 51 per cent viscose, 23 per cent cotton, 15 per cent linen and 11 per cent polyester, woven 140 centimetres wide with no pattern repeat to allow for. It is tested to 30,000 Martindale rubs and rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Parchment, a warm off-white, and Aqua, a soft blue-green. Parchment does the quiet work, while Aqua gives you a colour that still behaves like a neutral.

We use Ramble for the big pieces, where a pattern would be too much and a flat plain would be dull: a whole sofa, a pair of long curtains, a bed base and headboard. It is an obvious partner for the Block Party prints, and it works equally well in a room where the interest sits in the joinery or the rug. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat there is no matching, so you can order tight: measure, add ten per cent, and order. The 140 centimetre width means most standard windows take a single drop with no seam, which is the main reason we like these wovens for curtains. Railroading is worth discussing with your upholsterer for a long sofa back, because the weave has no direction to speak of and it is usually possible.
