Seaton Stripe is a printed stripe rather than a woven one, which means the lines have a slightly soft edge and sit on the surface of the cloth instead of being built into it. The horizontal repeat is 34.4 centimetres, exactly a quarter of the cloth width, so you get four stripe groups evenly spaced across. The vertical repeat of 8.9 centimetres tells you the stripe carries some internal detail rather than running as a plain band.

It is 68 per cent polyester and 32 per cent cotton, 137.45 centimetres wide, a full 54 inches, repeating 8.91 centimetres vertically and 34.36 centimetres horizontally, and tested to 50,000 rubs on the Martindale. A stripe of this scale is best used where its verticals help: full-length curtains, a tall headboard, the outside back of a wing chair. We also use it flat on a bed as a coverlet, where the lines run cleanly across. It sits well with a small-scale print from the same book and a plain textured woven. Stripes must be centred, not simply cut, so ask your maker to place a full stripe group at the centre of each blind and at the leading edge of each curtain in a pair, and to match the verticals across every seam. Because the repeat divides the width exactly into four, this is easier than usual. Allow one repeat per drop plus ten per cent, and confirm the direction before cutting any upholstery.
