Sherborne Gingham is exactly what the name says: a fine woven cotton gingham with a 1 centimetre check in both directions. At that scale it is a texture rather than a pattern, so from across a room it reads as a soft solid colour and only close up do you see the grid. It is woven, so the check is true on both faces, and the cloth is a crisp, light 100 per cent cotton with a clean, dry handle.
It is 100 per cent cotton, woven 137 centimetres wide, with a 1 centimetre repeat vertically and horizontally. No Martindale figure is published for this design. Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Red, Soft Blue, Aqua and Green. Soft Blue and Aqua sit inside the collection's blue-and-white theme, Red is the traditional choice, and Green is the freshest of the four.
A small gingham is the cloth we reach for when a room already has enough pattern but needs one more layer. Curtains in a cottage bedroom, a Roman blind over a sink, cushions, a bed valance, the frill on a lampshade, the lining of a basket. It goes with every print in the Bridport collection and with plain linen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A 1 centimetre repeat means there is effectively no matching, so allow ten per cent over and cut freely. What does matter is squareness: a gingham shows any distortion in the making-up immediately, so ask your maker to cut to the weave rather than to the selvedge and to check the check is running true before sewing. It is a light cloth, so interline anything full length.
