Sherborne Ticking is a narrow woven stripe on plain cotton, with a 2 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat at all, so the stripe runs unbroken down the length of the cloth. It is a classic ticking in construction: fine, close-set lines woven in rather than printed on, with the colour solid through the cloth. The hand is crisp and dry, and it presses well, which is half the reason ticking has stayed in use for so long.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with a 2 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat. No Martindale figure is published. Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Pink, Red, Blue, Aqua and Green. Blue and Red are the traditional tickings, Aqua and Green are the fresher readings, and Pink is the softest of the five to live with.
Ticking is the most useful stripe there is. We use it for curtains on a boot room or back stair window, for cushions, for a headboard, for loose covers on a small chair, for bed valances and for the inside of a curtain. It is the cloth that makes a room full of prints feel calm again. Pair it with any of the Bridport printed cottons. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Because the stripe is continuous down the cloth there is no vertical matching, so order your measured quantity plus ten per cent. Keep the stripes vertical on curtains and on the inside back of a chair, and run them front to back on seats, because a ticking that changes direction between pieces looks like a mistake. It is a light cloth, so interline long curtains and use a good bump on anything formal.
