Skane is another of the small cell weaves in Baker Lifestyle's Homes & Gardens II book, close in scale to Tretten but drawn on an even tighter grid: the repeat is a neat 2 centimetres square, so the structure reads as a fine, even texture rather than a motif. The viscose-cotton blend gives it some lustre and a soft, fluid hand that suits both curtains and upholstery, and it drapes well as a Roman blind too.

It is 63 per cent viscose and 37 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 2 centimetre repeat both ways. No rub count is published for this one, and Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Ivory/Stone/Grey, a soft neutral mix, and Aqua/Indigo/Linen, a cooler blue-green combination with a natural linen tone running through it.

We use Skane much as we use Tretten: as a textured neutral or near-neutral that can carry a room on its own or sit quietly under a stronger print. Ivory/Stone/Grey works well on curtains in a pale scheme, while Aqua/Indigo/Linen is the one we would choose for cushions or a chair where the room wants a little more colour. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a 2 centimetre repeat there is no meaningful matching to do, so order your measured quantity plus around ten per cent. As with any multi-yarn weave, try to cut all the pieces for one item from the same batch, since the balance between the toning yarns can vary slightly between dye lots. Dry clean only; keep it out of strong sun to protect the paler tones.
