Baker Lifestyle | Tretten

Tretten is a small woven texture from Baker Lifestyle's Homes & Gardens II book, close in spirit to a cell-structured jacquard: the repeat is tiny, 2 centimetres by 3, so at any normal distance it behaves as an all-over surface rather than a pattern you read. The viscose content gives it a soft lustre and a fluid drape that a pure cotton weave would not have.

It is woven from 67 per cent viscose and 33 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 2 centimetre vertical and 3 centimetre horizontal repeat. No Martindale figure is published for this design, which is usual for the dress-weight wovens in this book, and Baker Lifestyle rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It comes in a single colourway, Turquoise/Lime/Indigo, a lively three-tone mix that reads as a considered multicolour rather than any one hue.

The multi-tone colourway makes Tretten a useful bridge between stronger prints in a scheme: curtains in a room that wants colour without a repeating motif, or a pair of cushions that pick up whichever of the three tones the rest of the room favours. It also makes a good window-seat cushion, where the texture reads well at close range. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a repeat this small there is effectively nothing to match, so allow around ten per cent over your measured quantity and no more. Because the colour comes from three different yarns rather than a printed ground, keep offcuts from the same batch together if you are making up several pieces, since dye lots can shift the balance between the three tones slightly. Dry clean only; do not attempt to wash it at home.
