Mazamet is a woven fabric with a small, regular repeat, and it behaves in a room more like a texture than a statement. The pattern is close enough that from a few metres away it blends into a single tone with some life in it, and from nearby you see the weave. That makes it a useful cloth for a space that already has a lot going on, because it adds interest without competing with art, rugs or a strongly coloured wall.
The composition is 54% viscose and 46% cotton, which gives a soft hand with the body that cotton provides. The width is 137.45 cm (54"). The vertical repeat is 15.53 cm (6.1") and the horizontal repeat is 15.02 cm (5.9"). It comes from the Grand Voyage collection and is offered in four colourways: Blue, Red, Cognac and Green. We have not been given a Martindale figure, so we would use it for domestic upholstery and curtains.
We would hang it as a pair of curtains in a study or a sitting room, where the small repeat keeps a long drop calm. It also suits a pair of armchairs, a footstool or a window seat. Cognac is warm against oak and cream walls, and Blue sits well with natural linen and pale limewash. Red and Green are the more characterful choices, and we would pair them with plain, quiet neighbours and keep the woodwork simple so the colour has room to settle.
Repeats of around 15 cm are easy to match, but allow a little extra so the pattern lines up across joins and at the leading edges of curtains. Ask the workroom to hang the cloth and check the drape before it is cut. For upholstery, have the upholsterer place the weave on the straight grain and keep the pattern aligned on seat backs and cushions. A light lining protects viscose from sun and helps the curtains hang well. Cut from a single dye lot.
