Casamance | Abaca

Abaca is the plain in Casamance's Odéon collection: a hand-woven abaca and cotton cloth laid onto a metallic base on a non-woven backing. The weave is open enough for the foil to read through it, so the wall has a low, even shimmer beneath the texture. Abaca fibre varies with the season and place of harvest, and the weave shows it: density and colour shift a little along a length, which is the point. At 164 grams per square metre it is the lightest textured paper in the collection.

The composition is 80 per cent abaca and 20 per cent cotton, at a 91 centimetre usable width. Made in China, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 6 colourways: Beige Sable, Ambre, Doré, Argent, Nacré and Noir De Lune. Beige Sable and Nacré suit a bedroom; Doré and Ambre a dining room; Noir De Lune a small, dark room. It coordinates with the Mogador geometric.

We tend to use Abaca on all four walls of a bedroom or dressing room, as the quiet partner to Mogador on a feature wall, or in a hallway where its soft sheen carries light along the space. It sits well with dark timber, linen and stone, and it forgives a slightly uneven wall. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

We recommend a professional hanger who has worked with natural-fibre wallcoverings. Abaca is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable, with no repeat to match, but the hanger should balance the weave so the shading reads evenly. Divide the wall width by 0.91 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 5 drops, roughly 13 metres. Abaca varies in shade between batches, so order everything for the room from a single batch.
