Casamance | Balearica

Balearica is a relief wallcovering from Casamance's Midori collection, and the only one that owes nothing to woven fibre. A three-dimensional ink is printed onto a non-woven ground to build up a pattern of rippling, overlapping bands, then the surface is veiled to give it a soft matt finish. The design is drawn from the spread wings of a dancing crane, and on the wall it reads as feathering: a directional texture with real relief, catching side light along the ridges.

Casamance lists the composition as 100 per cent polyester, the non-woven itself a blend of cellulose, polyester, pigment and acrylic binder. It weighs 240 grams per square metre at a 120 centimetre usable width. Made in Belgium, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 4 colourways: Blanc Ivoire, Marine, Sienne Brulé and Sable. Blanc Ivoire and Sable depend on lighting to show the relief; Marine and Sienne Brulé are darker, and the ripples read more clearly.

We would use Balearica on the wall behind a bed, on the long wall of a corridor where the relief is lit by a run of downlights, or on all four walls of a small study in Marine. It pairs well with the plain Saori in a close tone and with pale, simple furniture. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

We recommend a professional hanger. Balearica is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable, and the ripples should be aligned across joins, so ask us for the repeat. Divide the wall width by 1.2 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres plus the repeat: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 4 drops, about 10 metres before matching allowance. Order the whole room from one batch so the relief and colour stay consistent.
