Benang is the lead embroidery of Casamance's Benang collection, an Indonesian-inspired group of weaves and embroideries. It is an abstract landscape rather than a picture: broad areas of stitching in viscose, polyester and wool sit on a ground with the look of a linen satin, and the play between the sheen of the viscose and the matt of the wool does the work that shading would do in a painting. Rice-field greens, monsoon greys and the dark minerals of volcanic stone are the reference points, and the scale is generous at a 61 by 68 centimetre repeat.
The base cloth is 42 per cent cotton, 20 per cent linen, 20 per cent polyester and 18 per cent viscose, embroidered in India, 136 centimetres wide and 450 grams per square metre with a straight match. Three colourways: Multico Bleu Sarcelle leans to teal and blue, Multico carries the full palette, and Multico Neutre is the quieter version for rooms that cannot take much colour. Pick the one whose dominant tone already exists in the room.
We use Benang on a headboard, where the embroidery sits at eye level and catches the bedside light, on a pair of large cushions on a plain sofa, and as a single full-height curtain panel on a tall window where the repeat can be seen whole. It is too textured for a daily seat. Around it, plains: a wool, a linen or one of the wide-width satins from the same house. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Embroideries need care in the making up. Allow one full 61 centimetre repeat extra per cut length so the pattern can be placed, ask for the embroidered face to be protected during sewing, and always line and interline curtains so the stitching is not seen in silhouette against the light. For a headboard, a firm board and a light wadding keep the ground flat.
