Bord de Seine is a satin jacquard with a pattern of interlaced lines, a flowing, continuous meander that stands in for the river the design is named after. The lines are woven in a satin weave against a linen-rich ground, so they catch the light while the ground stays matt, and the effect from across a room is of a soft, moving texture rather than a graphic. The polyamide warp gives the cloth a firm, smooth handle and good resistance to wear.

The composition is 52 per cent linen, 27 per cent polyamide and 21 per cent polyester, made in India at 139 centimetres wide and 360 grams per square metre. The repeat is 16 centimetres vertically and 47 centimetres horizontally with a straight match. There are 5 colourways: Mordoré, Sable, Perle, Nacre and Pétrole. Nacre and Perle are the pale, pearly ones; Sable is a warm neutral; Mordoré has a bronzed depth, and Pétrole is the one dark colour, a deep blue-green.

We use it for curtains in a sitting room or dining room where a plain would be too quiet and a print too much, and on upholstery: a bedroom chair, a headboard, dining chairs. It pairs with Turenne from the same collection in a matching colourway, and with the Pastourelle voile behind it at the window. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: the vertical repeat is short at 16 centimetres, so matching costs very little cloth, but the horizontal repeat of 47 centimetres means the pattern should be centred on each curtain and on the inside back of any chair. Line and interline curtains for the best fall. On seats, run the linen-rich cloth over a calico-lined foundation and avoid over-stretching, as satin weaves can shift on the bias.
