Casamance | Chaillot

Chaillot is the heaviest and most architectural wallcovering in Casamance's Odéon collection. The ground is a leather-look vinyl on a non-woven backing, onto which a velvet appliqué is embroidered in a repeating geometric of columns and stepped lines, so the pattern is built from three surfaces: the sheen of the leather effect, the matt pile of the velvet and the stitched edge that holds it down. The reference is the colonnade of the Palais de Chaillot.

It is 70 per cent PVC and 30 per cent polyester, 910 grams per square metre, at a 129 centimetre usable width. Made in India, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating and a stated acoustic absorption of aw 0.15; the fire rating is European class E and ASTM E84 Class C, so check this against any commercial requirement. There are 3 colourways: Noir Doré, Lie De Vin and Blanc Ivoire. Blanc Ivoire is the most restrained; Noir Doré is the one for a bar or a cinema room.

We would use Chaillot on a single wall, ideally one seen end on rather than lived against: the far wall of a dining room, the back of a bar or hallway, or behind a bed with a plain suede such as Tannage elsewhere. Light it from the side so the appliqué throws a shadow. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

This needs a professional hanger used to heavy vinyl-backed textiles. Chaillot is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable, the geometric must be matched across joins, and the weight calls for a good adhesive and a properly sealed wall. Divide the wall width by 1.29 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres plus one repeat: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 4 drops, 10 metres before matching allowance. Order the whole wall from one batch so the leather effect and pile colour stay consistent.
