Casamance | Cher Ami

Cher Ami is the title design of Casamance's collection of the same name, a group built around the idea of literary Paris and the painters and poets who kept each other company there. It is a polyester jacquard with a silky surface, woven in Italy, and the figured motif sits on a compact repeat of 18 centimetres by 35, so it reads as an all-over pattern with a soft sheen rather than a single statement. The weave has a good weight and a smooth, slightly cool hand.

It is 100 per cent inherently flame-retardant polyester, 140 centimetres wide and 490 grams per square metre, with a straight match. The flame-retardant fibre suits hotels, restaurants and rental properties; ask us for current test data if you are specifying for contract. The eight colourways are Céladon, Sable, Émeraude, Perle, Marine, Noir, Rouge Terreux and Ambre. Sable and Perle are the quiet options, Céladon and Émeraude bring green into a room without a print, and Marine, Noir, Rouge Terreux and Ambre are for a chair that needs to hold its own.

We use it on dining chair seats and backs, on a pair of occasional chairs either side of a fireplace, and as a bolster or a run of cushions along a plain sofa. It also makes a good curtain in a study or dining room where a little sheen is welcome after dark. Pair it with a plain velvet or a wool in one of the colours in the weave. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a straight match and a 35 centimetre horizontal repeat, allow one extra repeat per cut length for curtains and ask your upholsterer to centre the motif on seat and back so the pattern runs through the chair. Polyester jacquards take a stitch well but can fray at cut edges, so ask for overlocked seams on loose covers and cushions.
