Casamance | Dattara

Dattara is a palm pattern: fronds and trunks drawn in a stylised, repeating arrangement, given the raised look of embroidery and set on a ground that imitates sisal. On vinyl with a non-woven backing, the contrast between the fibrous ground and the stitched motif is the point, and the palms are spaced so the paper does not read as busy. It is the most decorative of the Racines papers.

Vinyl on a non-woven backing at 400 grams per square metre, 70 centimetres wide on a 10.05 metre roll, straight match with an 80 centimetre vertical repeat. Fire rated B-s2,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A, with an A+ COV rating, and made in Italy. Four colourways: Sable/Kaki, Beige/Eucalyptus, Marine/Topaze and Ébène/Mordoré; the first two are soft naturals for a bedroom, Marine/Topaze is a deep blue for a dining room, and Ébène/Mordoré has the motif in a gilded tone on near-black for a cloakroom or a bar.

We give Dattara a single wall, behind a bed or a bath, or the walls of a small room where it can be seen close to, with the plain Safra in the ground colour elsewhere as both share the same sisal texture. It suits rattan, dark timber and brass. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hang it as a paste-the-wall non-woven and dry strip later. The straight match means each drop lines up level with its neighbour, so cut every drop to whole 80 centimetre repeats and allow for that waste. A 70 centimetre by 10.05 metre roll covers about 7 square metres before matching; a typical 3.5 by 2.6 metre wall takes 5 drops of 3.2 metres, which is 2 rolls.
