Effleuré is a wide-width voile that feels like a fine wool sheer without being one. It is woven in Lyon on the linen warp Casamance uses for its Illusion voile, with a soft, hairy decorative yarn in the weft that gives it the surface and the touch of brushed wool, hence the name, which means to brush lightly against something. It hangs with a gentle, fluid drape and filters light to a soft glow rather than blocking it.
The composition is 37 per cent linen, 23 per cent viscose, 23 per cent acrylic, 12 per cent polyamide and 5 per cent polyester, made in France at 274 centimetres wide and 115 grams per square metre, with a free match. As a cloth over 250 centimetres it is railroaded, the width forming the drop. There are 23 colourways, running from Blanc, Ivoire, Sable and Perle through greyed greens and taupes such as Vert Grisé and Taupe Verdi to Ocre Foncé, Terre De Sienne, Parme and Noir. We tend to choose one a shade darker than the wall so the curtain reads as a colour rather than a fog.
We use Effleuré wherever a plain sheer is needed but a crisp linen voile would feel too cool: a bedroom, a sitting room with a view, a landing. It works alone on a wave track or as the inner layer behind a wool curtain such as Arthur's Seat, and it is soft enough to be gathered generously without bulk. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
For making up, the finished drop is limited to about 274 centimetres less hems, so check ceiling heights before you order. Use a wave or a soft gathered heading, a fine lead weight chain in the hem rather than individual weights, and ask your maker to leave the curtain to hang for a few days before the final hem is set, as linen-based voiles settle a little.
