Casamance | Elgin

Elgin is a wool weave with a stripe in it, made from the same recycled-wool yarn as the rest of the Scotia collection. The wool gives it a dry, dense, slightly felted hand and a matt surface that takes colour softly; the stripe is two-toned, each colourway pairing one shade with another, so the cloth reads as one considered colour from a distance and two up close. It is the kind of stripe that has been in country houses for a century, redrawn with a cleaner edge.

The composition is 70 per cent recycled wool, 25 per cent polyamide and 5 per cent other fibres, with fire-retardant properties built into the yarn, woven in Italy at 144 centimetres wide and 405 grams per square metre. The pattern repeats across the width at 36 centimetres and runs continuously along the length, so it is a free match. There are 4 colourways: Olive Orange, Ocre Pétrole, Pierre Bleue Paon and Beige Taupe. The first three are for colour; Beige Taupe is the neutral.

We use Elgin on dining chairs, on the seat of a window bench, on a footstool or as a pair of curtains in a study. It is made to go with the Scotia check and the plain Arthur's Seat, both woven from the same yarn, so a three-cloth scheme of plain sofa, striped chairs and checked curtains is straightforward and will hold together. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: there is no vertical repeat, so curtains cut economically, but do keep the stripe running the same way on every panel and centre a stripe on the leading edge. On seats, decide early whether the stripe runs front to back or side to side and keep it consistent across a set. Wool curtains benefit from a bump interlining and should be left to drop for a few days before the final hem is pressed.
