Casamance | Gandin

Gandin is a geometric jacquard from the Cher Ami collection, an interlacing of shapes that has a sense of movement to it, as though the forms were passing one another. The repeat is small, 22 centimetres by 18, so on a chair it reads as a lively, lattice-like texture rather than a bold pattern. It is woven in Italy from flame-retardant polyester with a smooth, faintly lustrous face. The name is old Parisian slang for the dandies who gathered on the Boulevard de Gand, now the Boulevard des Italiens.

It is 100 per cent inherently flame-retardant polyester, 140 centimetres wide, 515 grams per square metre, with a straight match on a 22 by 18 centimetre repeat. Seven colourways: Sable and Perle for a neutral room; Céladon, a grey-green; Marine and Noir for depth; and Rouge Terreux and Ambre, an earthy red and a warm amber. The palette is shared with Cher Ami and Ascension from the same group, so the three can be mixed in one room without the colours arguing.

We use Gandin on dining chairs and bar stools, on a pair of bedroom chairs, on cushions across a plain velvet sofa, and as a Roman blind where the small repeat sits well in a flat panel. Its flame-retardant construction makes it a natural candidate for restaurants, hotel bedrooms and rental properties; ask us for the current test data before specifying for contract. Allow one extra 22 centimetre repeat per cut for matching and ask your upholsterer to centre the lattice on the seat and carry it through to the inside back. Polyester jacquards can fray at the cut edge, so overlock seams on loose covers and cushions. It is not a heavy cloth, so a cotton backing on tight seats is worth the small extra cost.
