Hida is a hand-made abaca wallcovering from Casamance's Midori collection, built up in layers rather than woven flat. The abaca is woven by hand on a wooden loom, cut into rippling bands and laid onto a metallic foil, then brushed along the top edge of each ripple with paint so the ridges read as a soft, clouded line. The result is a landscape of low, overlapping hills running across the wall, with the foil glinting between the fibres; the reference is the ridgeline of the Japanese Alps.
The composition is 80 per cent abaca and 20 per cent cotton on a non-woven backing, 465 grams per square metre, at a 91.5 centimetre usable width. Made in China, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of D-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 4 colourways: Bleu Nuit, Latté Cuivré, Gris Perle and Blanc Ivoire. Blanc Ivoire and Gris Perle are the calm options; Bleu Nuit suits a dining room or study where the foil can pick up lamplight.
We would put Hida on the wall behind a bed, running the ripples the full width of the room, or across the end wall of a dining room with the other walls in a plain silk-effect such as Saori. Keep the surrounding surfaces matt so the foil is the only sheen. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.
This is a job for a professional hanger. Hida is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable; the ripples need aligning across each join, so allow an extra drop for matching. Divide the wall width by 0.915 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 5 drops, roughly 13 metres. Abaca is a natural fibre and varies in shade between batches, so order the whole room from one batch.
