Casamance | Hugo

Hugo is a wide-width voile with the look of woven raffia. A fine polyester yarn is combined with an irregular flat yarn that sits proud of the surface, and the two together give the cloth a visible, tactile grain; held against the light it has the open, basket-like quality of a natural fibre blind, but it hangs as softly as a curtain. It is one of the more textured sheers in the Les Bateliers group, and it suits rooms where a plain net would look thin.

The composition is 31 per cent polyester, 30 per cent cotton, 22 per cent acrylic, 11 per cent recycled acrylic, 3 per cent recycled polyester and 3 per cent recycled cotton, woven in Turkey at 320 grams per square metre. It is 295 centimetres wide and made to be railroaded, with the width as the drop, and it is a free match. Four colourways: Ivoire and Sable, the pale naturals; Beige Foncé, a deeper sand that reads like real raffia; and Mordoré, a bronze that gives a warm glow to the light coming through it.

We use Hugo as a single-layer sheer on garden doors and terrace windows, where its raffia look sits well with outdoor furniture and a stone floor, and as the inner layer behind a linen curtain in a living room. It is also good on a stair or landing window that needs softening rather than covering. Pair it with the Beaumarchais plains in a deeper tone. Order by track length, allowing 2 to 2.2 times fullness for a wave heading plus side hems. The 295 centimetre width gives a usable drop of around 280 centimetres. Ask your maker for a chain weight in the hem and no lining; the flat yarn can snag on rough surfaces, so keep it clear of textured walls and hooks once it is hung.
