Casamance | Intonaco

Intonaco takes its name from the finishing coat of plaster on which frescoes were painted, and that is what it imitates: a trowelled lime surface, printed on vinyl with a non-woven backing, with a pattern of interlacing arches picked out in a shadow a tone darker than the ground. The arches give it structure at a distance, while close to it reads as mineral texture. It is the most architectural paper in the Striato collection.

Vinyl on a non-woven backing at 400 grams per square metre, 70 centimetres wide on a 10.05 metre roll. It is a half-drop (offset) match with a 75 centimetre vertical repeat. Fire rated B-s2,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A, with an A+ COV rating, and made in Italy. Five colourways: Ivoire, Grège, Argent, Sauge and Terracotta; Ivoire and Grège are the ones we would use across a whole room, and Sauge or Terracotta on a single wall where the arches can be the point.

We would put Intonaco on the walls of a dining room or a hallway where there is a run of uninterrupted wall for the arches to repeat across, or on a bedhead wall with the other walls painted to match the ground colour. It suits limewash, stone floors and simple iron or timber furniture. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hang it as a paste-the-wall non-woven; it dry strips when the time comes. The half-drop match means alternate drops step down by half the repeat, so number the drops as you cut and allow for one extra repeat per pair. A 70 centimetre by 10.05 metre roll covers about 7 square metres before matching; a typical 3.5 by 2.6 metre wall takes 5 drops, which is 2 rolls with the offset allowed for.
