Casamance | Les Bateliers

Les Bateliers is the voile that gives its name to the collection, a group of wide-width sheers that imagine Paris from a boat on the Seine. It is an open weave: a blended linen and polyester yarn is used in both warp and weft, and a second, satin-finish polyester yarn is introduced into the weft to give the cloth a faint sheen. The open construction lets light through generously, and the linen in the blend gives it a slightly dry, natural look rather than the slipperiness of an all-synthetic sheer.

The composition is 75 per cent polyester and 25 per cent linen, woven in Turkey at 380 grams per square metre. It is 300 centimetres wide and designed to be railroaded, so the width becomes the drop and a wide window is dressed from one seamless length, and it is a free match. Three colourways: Ivoire, the coolest and whitest; Écru, an unbleached off white; and Sable, a pale sand that reads warm against white walls and cool against stone.

We use it as the sheer layer in almost any room: behind a heavy curtain in a bedroom, alone across a wall of glazing onto a terrace, or as a wave-headed sheer in a hallway. It is our usual answer when a client wants light and privacy without a blind. It sits happily with any of the Beaumarchais plains and with linen curtains. Railroaded sheers are ordered by the track, not the drop: measure the finished track length, allow 2 to 2.2 times fullness and add side hems and returns. The 300 centimetre width gives a usable drop of around 285 centimetres after hemming. Use a fine chain weight in the hem, no lining, and let the curtain hang for a few days before the final hem is set, as the linen content will relax a little.
