Casamance | Les Tisserands

Les Tisserands is the design that gives its name to the collection, and it is the clearest statement of the group's idea: a jacquard that reads as a woven tapestry, its pattern an interplay of vertical and horizontal lines at generous scale. It is woven on a cotton warp with a thick weft yarn blended from wool and linen, and because that yarn is spun from several shades at once the surface has a soft, heathered quality rather than flat blocks of colour. The hand is dense and dry, with a slight tooth.

The composition is 54 per cent cotton, 22 per cent wool, 22 per cent linen and 2 per cent polyamide, woven in Turkey. It is 132 centimetres wide, 705 grams per square metre and a straight match with a repeat of 42 centimetres vertically and 33 horizontally. Four two-tone colourways: Gris Tabac, Tabac Pierre Bleue, Ocre Vert and Terracotta Taupe. Gris Tabac is the easiest to place; Tabac Pierre Bleue is the one we would choose against dark oak; Ocre Vert and Terracotta Taupe bring warmth to a room with white walls.

We use it on a single important chair, on the seat and back of a bench in a hallway, on a headboard, and as a large floor cushion or a pouffe. One piece is usually all a room needs. Pair it with the plainer Moreo and Haute Lice from the same collection, or with a wool plain in one of the two tones. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one extra 42 centimetre repeat per cut so the grid can be centred on seat and back and matched from inside back to seat front; at 132 centimetres wide, a large chair may need the pattern railroaded, so ask your upholsterer to plan the cut before ordering. Use a heavier needle and thread, and a firm foam under it rather than feather.
