Casamance | Lissandre

Lissandre is a small-scale jacquard from Les Tisserands with a repeat of only 4 by 5 centimetres, so it reads as a rich, closely worked texture rather than a pattern. Its depth of colour comes from a blended wool weft yarn spun from several shades, which gives every colourway a range of small nuances inside it; nothing is flat. It is woven in Italy and has a firm, slightly dry hand with a little softness from the wool.

The composition is 38 per cent acrylic, 23 per cent polyester, 12 per cent viscose, 11 per cent wool, 10 per cent cotton and 6 per cent linen. It is 140 centimetres wide, 640 grams per square metre, and a straight match on the small 4 by 5 centimetre repeat. Five colourways: Crème, the pale one; Ocre, a muted gold; Kaki; Pierre Bleue, a slate blue; and Lie De Vin, a deep wine. They share the collection's palette, so Lissandre can be used as the near-plain partner to the larger Tradition and Les Tisserands jacquards.

We use Lissandre on the pieces that do the everyday work: a family sofa, dining chairs, a window seat, an ottoman. Its tight texture hides marks and creases better than a plain and does not fight with a pattern nearby. It is also a good cloth for a banquette in a kitchen. Pair it with a plain velvet or a linen in the same tone, or with one of the larger tapestry weaves. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is small enough that matching is easy, but it is still a straight match, so allow a few centimetres extra per cut and ask your upholsterer to keep the tiny grid running true across seams. Use a heavier needle for this dense cloth, and a cotton backing on tight seats; no other special handling is needed.
