Casamance | Mogador

Mogador is a hand-laid abaca wallcovering from Casamance's Odéon collection, cut and placed in an Art Deco geometry over a metallic ground. Hand-woven abaca is cut and set by hand onto a metallic base, a marquetry of fibre: each panel of the geometric has its own direction of weave, and the foil shows between and beneath them. The surface catches light differently across the design; the name is a Paris theatre's, and it has a certain stage-set glamour.

The composition is 80 per cent abaca and 20 per cent cotton on a non-woven backing, 380 grams per square metre, at a 91 centimetre usable width. Made in China, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B s1 d0, Class B to ASTM E84 and a stated acoustic absorption of aw 0.15. There are 4 colourways, Ambre, Doré, Argent and Nacré, named for the metallic beneath the fibre. Nacré is the softest; Doré and Ambre suit evening rooms; Argent is cooler.

We would use Mogador on the wall behind a bed, above a dado in a dining room or lining a powder room, with the plain Abaca on the remaining walls so the pattern has somewhere to stop. It suits walnut, polished nickel or brass, and a plain velvet on the seating. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.

This is a professional hanger's job, and one who has handled abaca. Mogador is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable, the geometry must be matched across joins, and the drops should be laid out on the floor first. Divide the wall width by 0.91 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres plus a matching allowance: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 5 drops, roughly 13 metres before matching. Abaca varies in shade between batches, so order the whole room from one batch.
