Moreo is a textured plain from Les Tisserands, woven in Italy on a cotton warp with two decorative weft yarns. One is a soft, wool-like effect yarn; the other is a twist of four coloured threads that has been twisted again around a black polyamide thread, so a fine dark fleck runs right through the cloth. The result is a heavy, nubbly weave with real depth of colour, more like a hand-loomed cloth than a machine plain, and it holds light well across a large surface.
The composition is 55 per cent cotton, 15 per cent acrylic, 10 per cent viscose, 10 per cent wool, 7 per cent polyester and 3 per cent polyamide. It is 138 centimetres wide, weighs 690 grams per square metre and is a free match. Five colourways: Ecru and Sable at the light end, Gris Cendre, an ash grey, Tabac, a warm tobacco brown, and Bleu Deauville, a soft, slightly faded blue. All five carry the black fleck, which is what keeps the paler shades from looking bland on a big sofa.
We use Moreo on large sofas and sectional seating where a plain would be dull and a pattern too much, on dining chairs in a kitchen that gets daily use, and on an ottoman. It is also good as a heavy curtain in a study or a snug where its weight helps with draughts. Pair it with the figured Les Tisserands jacquards in the same palette, or with a velvet in a deeper tone. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
There is no repeat, so widths cut plain with no allowance. Ask your upholsterer to check that the fleck runs in the same direction on every panel, to use a slightly longer stitch on this thick cloth, and to consider a cotton backing on tight seats. For curtains, line and interline; the weight rewards a proper pleated heading.
