Pienza imitates the hand-smoothed lime plaster of the Val d'Orcia: broad, soft trowel strokes with the colour varying gently across the surface, printed on vinyl with a non-woven backing and given depth by a tone-on-tone shadow. The marks are larger and softer than those of Pitigliano, so it reads as a mottled wall rather than a rough one. It is matt, with no pattern as such.
Vinyl on a non-woven backing at 400 grams per square metre, 70 centimetres wide on a 10.05 metre roll, a half-drop (offset) match with a 70 centimetre vertical repeat. Fire rated B-s2,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A, with an A+ COV rating, and made in Italy. Eight colourways: Ivoire, Nude, Argent, Céladon, Sauge, Ocre, Marron Glacé and Anthracite; Ivoire, Nude and Argent give a pale plaster wall, Céladon and Sauge a soft green one, and Ocre, Marron Glacé and Anthracite are for a dining room or a single wall.
We use Pienza on the walls of a sitting room or a bedroom where a real plaster finish is out of reach, and in bathrooms outside the shower. It suits limewashed woodwork, terracotta floors and linen, and it takes pictures well. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hang it as a paste-the-wall non-woven and dry strip later. The half-drop match means alternate drops step down by 35 centimetres, half the repeat, so number the drops as you cut and allow an extra repeat per pair. A 70 centimetre by 10.05 metre roll covers about 7 square metres before matching; a typical 3.5 by 2.6 metre wall takes 5 drops, which is 2 rolls once the offset is allowed for.
