Casamance | Pyrole

Pyrole is an openwork voile from Casamance's Les Bateliers collection of wide-width sheers. A very fine warp is crossed by a decorative weft yarn that changes in colour and thickness as it goes, so the cloth reads as a soft, slightly irregular texture with light passing through the open structure. It filters daylight rather than blocking it, which is what we want from a sheer in a bright room. The name is that of pyrola, a small woodland plant with rounded leaves, and the cloth has the same quiet character.

The composition is 66 per cent polyester and 34 per cent cotton, woven in India at 340 grams per square metre. It comes in a 305 centimetre width, which means it is designed to be railroaded: the width becomes the drop and there are no seams across a wide window. Nine colourways cover the natural end of the palette: Ivoire, Nacre and Perle for a pale, cool sheer, Gris Perle and Anthracite for something greyer, and Lin, Taupe, Gris / Taupe and Marron Glacé where a warmer tone suits the walls.

We use Pyrole as a full-width sheer behind heavier curtains in living rooms and bedrooms, on its own across sliding doors that open onto a terrace, and as a wave-headed sheer in a hallway where privacy matters more than blackout. It pairs well with a wide-width plain such as Beaumarchais from the same house, in a tone a step deeper than the sheer. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because it is railroaded, order by the width of the window rather than the drop: measure the finished track, multiply by your fullness (2 to 2.2 times for a wave heading) and add hems and returns. The 305 centimetre width gives a usable drop of around 290 centimetres after hems, so check your ceiling height first. Ask your curtain maker for a fine chain weight in the hem.
