Safra is a plain that imitates sisal, the coarse plant fibre more usually seen woven into floor matting. The weave is reproduced at full scale on vinyl with a non-woven backing, so the wall has the slightly ridged, fibrous surface of the real thing without its fragility or its seams. It is a texture paper first and a colour second, and it takes side light well.
Vinyl on a non-woven backing at 400 grams per square metre, 70 centimetres wide on a 10.05 metre roll, free match with no vertical repeat. Fire rated B-s2,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A, with an A+ COV rating, and made in Italy. Sixteen colourways, from Ivoire, Coquille, Sable and Beige through Galet, Grège, Givre and Amande to Miel, Sienne, Cèdre Rouge, Eucalyptus, Cactus, Topaze, Marine and Ébène; the naturals are the ones we use across a room, and the deeper shades on a single wall or in a study.
We use Safra where a real grasscloth would be impractical: a hallway, a family sitting room, a bedroom in a holiday house. It is the plain we pair with Dattara and Argania, which sit on the same sisal ground, and it suits jute rugs, rattan and oak. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hang it as a paste-the-wall non-woven; it dry strips later. As a free match there is little waste, but cut drops in sequence from the roll and hang them the same way up, since a woven texture reads differently when a drop is reversed. A 70 centimetre by 10.05 metre roll covers about 7 square metres; a typical 3.5 by 2.6 metre wall takes 5 drops, so allow 2 rolls.
