Saori is the plain silk-effect wallcovering in Casamance's Midori collection. A satin-weave polyester cloth is printed with colour and laid over a metallic foil on a non-woven backing, so the sheen sits under the colour: the wall reads as a plain but shifts as you move, with a soft iridescence that paint or paper cannot give. The finish is closer to a fine silk than a brushed metallic, and it takes lamplight well.
It is 100 per cent polyester, 260 grams per square metre, at a 120 centimetre usable width. Made in Belgium, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of B-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 17 colourways, from Perle, Sable, Beige Poudré, Beige Doré and Rose Poudré through Céladon, Turquoise, Vert Olive, Émeraude, Bleu Électrique and Marine to Orange Terreux, Cognac, Grenat, Mordoré, Argent and Noir. Several coordinate with the Midori scenic; the pale neutrals are the everyday choices.
We tend to use Saori on all four walls of a bedroom or dressing room, where a plain with some life in it does more than paint, and as the companion to Midori or Hida on a feature wall. In a dining room lit by candles, Cognac or Grenat on every wall is worth the nerve. Sold by the metre; order a sample before committing to a full room.
We recommend a professional hanger for a silk-effect wallcovering, as the sheen shows every join and the wall must be smooth and sealed. Saori is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable with no pattern to match; the hanger may reverse alternate drops so the sheen reads evenly. Divide the wall width by 1.2 for the number of drops, round up, and multiply by the wall height plus 10 centimetres: a 4 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes 4 drops, about 10 metres. Order the whole room from one batch so foil and colour stay consistent.
