Casamance | Scotia

Scotia is a woven wool check, the collection's namesake, drawn at a more open scale than a traditional tartan so the grid reads clearly across a room. The wool gives it a dry, matt, slightly felted surface and the depth of colour that only wool takes; each colourway sets two colours against each other, and the overlaps where they cross make a third. It is a check with a country-house lineage and a cleaner, more contemporary drawing.

The composition is 70 per cent recycled wool, 25 per cent polyamide and 5 per cent other fibres, woven in Italy at 140 centimetres wide and 390 grams per square metre. The repeat is 38 centimetres vertically and 35 centimetres horizontally with a straight match. There are 4 colourways: Ocre Orange, Ocre Pierre Bleue, Beige Bleu Glacier and Orange Lie De Vin. Beige Bleu Glacier is the soft, easy one; the others carry more colour and are for a room that can take it.

We use Scotia on armchairs, on dining chairs, on a window seat, and as curtains in a study, a boot room or a snug. It is designed to pair with the plain Arthur's Seat, woven from the same yarn in 45 colours, so pick one of the two check colours and run it plain on the sofa or the blind, and the scheme is done. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: a check must be matched at every seam and kept square to the piece, so allow one extra repeat per width and ask your upholsterer to centre the grid on the inside back and seat before cutting the rest. On curtains, keep a full check at the leading edge. Wool takes a bump interlining well; let the curtains hang for a few days before the final hem is set.
