Sett is a jacquard woven with a wide horizontal stripe, and the stripe is built out of texture as much as colour. Over a polyester, linen and viscose warp the weft alternates an ivory bouclé yarn with five different chenilles, so each band has its own surface: some looped and dry, some soft and plush. It is a heavy, comfortable cloth that reads as a broad stripe from a distance and as a series of textures up close. The name is the Scots word for the pattern of a tartan.
The composition is 45 per cent polyester, 30 per cent acrylic, 18 per cent viscose and 7 per cent linen, woven in Italy at 140 centimetres wide and 550 grams per square metre. The repeat is 36 centimetres vertically and 35 centimetres horizontally, with a straight match. There are 3 colourways: Pierre Bleue, Ocre and Beige. Pierre Bleue is the cool, slatey one; Ocre is warm and golden; Beige is the neutral that goes almost anywhere.
We use Sett on the seat and back of an armchair, on a bench cushion, or as a bold pair of curtains in a country sitting room. The stripe is woven across the width, so on a sofa it can run horizontally as it comes off the roll or be railroaded to run vertically, and both look right. It sits well with the wool plains and checks of the same Scotia collection. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: decide the direction of the stripe before ordering, because it changes the quantity. Run horizontally, the stripe must be matched across every seam and you need an extra repeat per drop; run vertically by railroading, the seams disappear into the stripe and there is much less waste. Chenille and bouclé cloths want a firm foundation on upholstery and a full lining for curtains.
