Casamance | Silence Blanc

Silence Blanc is a landscape printed on linen voile. The drawing was made by hand in charcoal, chalk and watercolour, bare trees and low ground under snow at first light, and printed digitally onto Casamance's Illusion linen voile so the marks keep their softness and the cloth its drape. Hung at a window it behaves like a wash of light with a faint horizon in it rather than a picture; it is the quietest way we know to put a scene into a room.

It is 100 per cent linen, 297 centimetres wide and just 100 grams per square metre, printed with a reactive digital process. The design repeats at 297 centimetres in the width direction and 240 centimetres along the length, with a free match. There are 2 colourways: Bleu Baltique and Beige. Bleu Baltique gives the sky a cool grey-blue; Beige keeps everything in the warm, chalky register of early morning.

This is a curtain fabric, and specifically a railroaded one: the 297 centimetre width becomes the drop, and the landscape runs across the window in one continuous piece with no vertical seams. We would hang it as a single wide sheer in a bedroom or a bathroom, unlined, so the light comes through the drawing, or as the inner layer behind a plain linen curtain in a sitting room. Keep the walls plain and let the horizon do the work. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Two making-up points. Because the cloth is turned sideways, the maximum finished drop is roughly 297 centimetres less hems, so check ceiling height before ordering; the length you buy is the finished curtain width plus fullness. Ask your maker to centre the design so the horizon sits at the same height on each panel, and to use a fine linen thread and a narrow double hem so nothing heavy shows through the voile.
