Casamance | Silvara

Silvara is an embroidered wallcovering from Casamance's Tramis collection, and the one for a client who thinks textured papers are too quiet. The ground is a woven paper on a non-woven backing; over it, a jute yarn is embroidered in long, flowing curves that run and split like the grain of a cut tree, with viscose threads adding sheen where the lines gather. The stitching sits well proud of the weave, so the pattern reads by shadow as much as by colour.

The composition is 100 per cent paper with a jute and viscose embroidery, 535 grams per square metre, supplied as a single panel 86 centimetres wide by 7.2 metres long. Made in India, it carries an A+ indoor air quality rating, a European fire rating of D-s1, d0 and Class A to ASTM E84. There are 4 colourways: Beige Naturel, Blanc Naturel Clair, Orange Terreux Naturel and Amande Naturel. The first two stay close to the ground and read as texture; the other two give the embroidery more presence.

We would use Silvara on one wall only: behind a bed, across the end of a dining room, or on the wall a hallway opens onto, with the other walls in a plain such as Tramis or Kira. It suits pale timber, bleached linen and matt plaster, in a room without much competing pattern. Sold as a single panel; order a sample before committing.

A professional hanger is essential; the embroidery is raised and the design must be aligned from one drop to the next. Silvara is paste-the-wall and dry-strippable. Each panel gives 2 drops at any ceiling height up to about 3.5 metres, so divide the wall width by 0.86 for the number of drops, round up, and halve it for the number of panels: a 4 metre wall takes 5 drops, so 3 panels. Paper and jute vary in shade between batches, so ask for all panels from a single batch.
