Casamance | Skoura Encadré

Skoura Encadré is a wallpanel rather than a wallpaper: a hand-drawn palm grove, worked in charcoal on a ground that imitates natural straw, and here finished with a drawn frame around the scene so it hangs like a single large picture. It comes as three drops that make up one composition, 2.04 metres wide and 3 metres tall. The drawing is loose and open, with the trees standing against plenty of pale ground, so it does not crowd a room.

The material is vinyl on a non-woven backing at 330 grams per square metre. Each of the three panels is 68 centimetres wide and 3 metres long, and they hang as a straight match. Fire rated B-s2,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A, with an A+ COV rating, and made in Italy. Two colourways: Ivoire/Sable, a warm pale ground with the drawing in sand, and Lin/Noir, the same grove drawn in black on linen; the first is the softer of the two and the second gives a crisper, more graphic result.

Because it is framed, we treat it as a piece of art: centred on the wall behind a bed, above a console in a hall, or on the end wall of a dining room with the rest of the room in a plain such as Sora or Safra. The unframed Skoura is the one to choose if you want the grove to run wall to wall. Sold as a set of three panels; order a sample before committing.

Hang it as a paste-the-wall non-woven; it dry strips later. Measure first: the set is 3 metres tall, so on a 2.6 metre ceiling there is about 40 centimetres to lose, and you need to check where the frame line falls before you cut. Work from the centre panel out so the frame stays symmetrical, and plumb the first drop. One set covers 2.04 metres of a 3.5 metre wall, so plan the plain either side.
